John,

Today marks the Voting Rights Act’s 57th birthday. This landmark legislation expanded the right to vote to millions of Americans who were previously discriminated against on the basis of their race — especially Black voters in the South.

John, let’s celebrate this historic birthday by ensuring we are registered to vote in the upcoming November election. Check your Registration » [[link removed]] This legislation originated from the continuous history of voter suppression faced by the Black community. Now, we’re seeing that history repeat itself again with states like Georgia, Nevada, and Wisconsin passing voting rules which suppress the votes of our Black community and other people of color.

I stand firmly against these sorts of discriminatory voting policies and I think we should rightfully viewthem as threats to our democracy.

On this historic anniversary, we’re reminded that we must do everything we can to protect the right to vote. The first thing you can do, John, is to double-check that you’re registered to vote in the upcoming November election and remind your friends to do the same! Check your Registration » [[link removed]] This November, there will be many important decisions on your ballot — propositions, re-electing Governor Newsom, and local races too…including mine. Your vote will be critical in deciding the future of many issues facing our state, make sure you’ll be able to give it.

Onward,

Shamann
