When the Derek Chauvin verdict was announced on Tuesday — GUILTY on all counts for the murder of George Floyd — I breathed a sigh of relief along with the rest of the country.

But this was not justice. This was accountability. In a just world, George Floyd would be alive today.

We must continue our fight to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the Senate to ensure that what happened to George Floyd never happens again. A conviction in the Derek Chauvin case is the baseline we should expect in a civilized society.

The fact that we had graphic video of the crime and persuasive, comprehensive witness and expert testimony and we were still on the edge of our seats shows that we’ve got a lot of work to do to reform our criminal legal system.

In this case, we got accountability — but all too often, police officers have gotten away with killing people they swore to protect, especially Black people. We still have no accountability for Breonna Taylor or Tamir Rice or Philando Castile or Adam Toledo or countless others.

Getting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act signed into law would be a critical first step in the direction of justice. We passed it in the House, and now the Senate must do its job and pass it as well.
