John,
When the Derek Chauvin verdict was announced on Tuesday — GUILTY on all counts for the murder of George Floyd — I breathed a sigh of relief along with the rest of the country.
But this was not justice. This was accountability. In a just world, George Floyd would be alive today.
A conviction in the Derek Chauvin case is the baseline we should expect in a civilized society.
The fact that we had graphic video of the crime and persuasive, comprehensive witness and expert testimony and we were still on the edge of our seats shows that we’ve got a lot of work to do to reform our criminal legal system.
In this case, we got accountability — but all too often, police officers have gotten away with killing people they swore to protect, especially Black people. We still have no accountability for Breonna Taylor or Tamir Rice or Philando Castile or Adam Toledo or countless others.
Getting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act signed into law would be a critical first step in the direction of justice. We passed it in the House, and now the Senate must do its job and pass it as well.
Thank you for standing with me in the fight for real justice. It has been a long time coming, but this week showed us that we can create the change we seek in our society, but only if we work relentlessly for it.
Onward,
Mondaire
