Earth Day is April 22nd! Common Tree Diseases with Brian Hudelson 5th in the Leafing Out webinar series Thursday, April 15, 2021 - 12:00-1:00 PM Produced in collaboration with the Dane County Tree Board Join 1000 Friends and Brian Hudelson, the Director of Diagnostic Services at the UW-Madison Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic to learn the most common diseases impacting our urban trees. Brian will teach us about the most prevalent tree diseases and share methods for their management and prevention. We’ll stop periodically throughout the presentation so Brian can answer any specific questions you have. Brian is a frequent guest on the Larry Meiller Show on WPR and is excited to answer any of your tree disease questions! They have all worked to protect the environment and our quality of life in Wisconsin. “His contributions, like the guidance he provided as a teacher, have shaped the lands and waters of our state in critical ways, even as they have rippled out far beyond Wisconsin.” – Curt Meine Steve will be honored on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 9am Register for Steve Born's Induction Event We also wish to recognize Stan Temple, a 1000 Friends founding member, as a 2021 Conservation Hall of Fame inductee. “Dr. Temple’s scholarship and voluminous scientific contributions have helped reshape the entire field of wildlife ecology and management. Register for Stan Temple’s Induction Event Nature at Work: Inspiring Just Responses for an Unruly World April 22 - 23, 2021 8:30 a.m. CDT on Thursday to noon on Friday We invite you to join the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies for a virtual celebration of Earth Day. This event titled, Nature at Work: Inspiring Just Responses for an Unruly World will feature a wide range of live and prerecorded sessions from speakers who will discuss the ways in which an unruly climate, biodiversity decline and water scarcity are placing a significant and unjust burden on the most vulnerable populations. The Earth Day learning event will also explore nature’s incredible power and how increased efforts to respect it will lead to social justice and mitigate some of our greatest climate related challenges. The event is free but you must register! Legislative Update 1000 Friends is following the budget process carefully and also the Legislative session and providing updates on our website. We also have a calendar of committee hearings and listening sessions listed on our website. Legislative Calendar Joint Committee on Finance All public hearings will be streamed by WisconsinEye and can be viewed at Wisconsin Eye The first hearing was Friday, April 9th in Whitewater. The legislators took testimony from the public on what lawmakers' should include in their two-year spending plan. They heard from local officials, business owners, firefighters, dentists, college students, environmentalists, librarians and others on a host of issues. Some asked for more funding for schools, some for prison reform and some for broader support for public transit. The JFC is conducting three more public hearings on the budget over the next two weeks: Wednesday, April 21, 2021 The Hodag Dome, Rhinelander, WI Thursday, April 22, 2021 UW-Stout, Great Hall, Memorial Student Center Menomonie, WI Wednesday, April 28, 2021 Virtual Each hearing begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m. Persons testifying will likely be limited to two minutes of testimony. Persons may also email comments on the state budget to the following email address: [email protected] Republicans have indicated they plan to re-write the Governor's budget from top to bottom so this budget process may take a while! Highlights from the Governor's Budget Abe's Arboretum Adventure This is the first post in Abe’s Arboretum Adventure series. Our Community Project Director, Abe Lenoch, will be visiting the Gardner Marsh at the UW Arboretum in Madison each week to see how the landscape changes throughout the spring. We’re highlighting the marsh to promote the importance of urban nature and green infrastructure for good water quality and the importance of protecting natural resources wherever we can to help shape healthy communities and healthy land. And most importantly, we’re promoting the big impact smart growth comprehensive plans have in protecting places like this across the state.
