Advocacy & Public Policy
Advocacy in Action Week
Join us March 2-5, 2021 as we (virtually) meet with state policymakers to
discuss adolescent health and teen pregnancy prevention. The event will
include an online advocacy training session, virtual meetings with
lawmakers and staff, and town hall sessions. Total time commitment will be
about 1-2 hours. To register, visit our Advocacy in Action page. [2]If you
are interested in serving as a regional group lead, please reach out to Jen
Biundo at

State Board of Education Update
On November 20, 2020, the State Board of Education revised the minimum
curriculum standards that guide sex education in Texas. The new standards
offer medically accurate, age appropriate information on topics including
contraception, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, healthy
relationships including respecting the boundaries of others, and much more.
Unfortunately, the new standards do not include consent or inclusivity for
LGBTQ+ youth. For more information on this work, visit www.texasisready.org
[3].
Research & Data
November Chart of the Month
Early access to prenatal care is important for healthy pregnancies and
births. However, pregnant teens are less likely to begin prenatal care in
the first trimester, and are more likely to receive no prenatal care at
all. This can be due to many factors, such as not realizing the pregnancy
has occurred, lack of a responsible parent or guardian to help them access
care, fear of telling parents or guardians about the pregnancy, or lack of
information or financial resources to access care. This problem is even
more significant among pregnant children aged 10 - 14 -- in this age group,
21% did not start prenatal care until the final trimester and 9% received
no prenatal care at all.

prevention and child welfare formed the Collaborative for Youth in Care

input from a diverse group of young adults and caregivers with lived
experience.
Through this process, we have developed a comprehensive research-informed
intervention and we are excited to share it with you. ON DEC. 11, 10 AM -
11:30 AM CST, WE WILL HOST A VIRTUAL RELEASE EVENT FOR OUR IMPLEMENTATION
PLAN.
