Early access to prenatal care is important for healthy pregnancies and births. However, pregnant teens are less likely to begin prenatal care in the first trimester, and are more likely to receive no prenatal care at all. This can be due to many factors, such as not realizing the pregnancy has occurred, lack of a responsible parent or guardian to help them access care, fear of telling parents or guardians about the pregnancy, or lack of information or financial resources to access care. This problem is even more significant among pregnant children aged 10 - 14 -- in this age group, 21% did not start prenatal care until the final trimester and 9% received no prenatal care at all.
