Hi John,
The State Board of Education (SBOE) isn't letting a little dicey weather keep them from meeting this week — and a s if the social studies standards debate weren't enough, they're taking a preliminary vote on a TEA-proposed statewide reading list . The list includes classics like Shakespeare, Poe, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and — you guessed it! — the Bible.
Like the Bible-infused Bluebonnet curriculum we've been fighting for the past year, this list pushes Christianity while shutting out sacred texts from every other major religion. Unlike Bluebonnet, it would be mandatory.
We've got it covered in-person, but here's what you can do to support from home.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
* Contact the SBOE: You can email the full board at
[email protected] [
[email protected]] and urge them to respect parents' rights to direct their children's religious education. Here are some talking points [[link removed]] to get you started.
* Watch the meeting with us: The meeting started at 2 p.m. today, and the reading list discussion is set for tomorrow. TFN Political Director Rocío Fierro-Pérez is set to testify. Access the livestream and agenda [[link removed]] on the SBOE website.
* Stay tuned : We're planning to launch a campaign in anticipation of the April meeting. Sign up for our SBOE Watch alerts [[link removed]] to make sure you don't miss it!
We don't expect a final vote on the reading list until the April meeting. We'll be sure to keep you updated on action items leading up to then, both for the list and the social studies standards revision.
Lastly, John, everything we do to defend public education — whether we're mobilizing at the SBOE [[link removed]] or helping local districts push back against biased curricula [[link removed]] — is only possible because of your support. Please donate to our Teach the Truth campaign [[link removed]] so that we can keep the pressure on and hold the SBOE accountable this April.
