Hi John,

Your CTF lawyers are preparing to intervene in the Cowichan decision appeals.

A court in British Columbia declared Aboriginal title can supersede fee simple title. Very simply, that could create uncertainty about the land title for the property your home is built on. This is far from settled because the appeals are already starting. This issue is important.

The federal government, the province of B.C., the city of Richmond and other First Nations communities are filing appeals to oppose the Cowichan decision.

More than 90 per cent of taxfighters like you told the Canadian Taxpayers Federation to get involved in this issue when we launched a recent one-question survey.

Your lawyers at the CTF took your marching orders and they’re working on an application to intervene at the appeal court to stand up for taxpayers and property rights.

Your CTF lawyers are tenacious. They’ve won court fights to help courageous Indigenous activists stand up for financial transparency in their communities. And they went right to the Supreme Court to successfully argue against the original anti-pipeline legislation (and we’re back fighting the amended legislation).

This legal fight for property rights will be one of the biggest cases in Canadian history and big court fights aren’t cheap.

You can make sure the legal war chest is full enough to take on this issue.

Donors like you are already pitching in to make sure your lawyers can join the court case. Your support means we can retain more expert legal advice, file freedom of information requests and get your lawyers to court.

The more people who pitch in, the more likely we are to win this appeal.

I’ve heard from hundreds of taxpayers over the past weeks who are worried about the uncertainty this decision casts over property rights. Your lawyers at the CTF are some of the best and they’re on it.

Thanks for standing up for Canadians, you’re making a difference.
