Email from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Campaign update from director Valentina Crast SHOP | SUPPORT | VOLUNTEER This Month You Helped Move an Industry Dear John, This month brought a meaningful win with real world impact: UK retailer Holland and Barrett announced they are removing krill products from their shelves. It is a clear sign that companies are listening when people demand better, and it proves that public pressure still has the power to change the way retailers operate. In 2026 we will push even harder, directing that same pressure at major US retailers who continue to profit from products tied to the depletion of Antarctica’s ecosystem. In Greece, crews cleared illegal octopus traps from protected waters. In the Upper Gulf of California, we worked with Mexican partners to free entangled sea lions caught in the same deadly gear threatening the vaquita. And inside the Vaquita Refuge, coordinated patrols with the Navy kept pressure low enough for the species to hold steady again this year, with scientists confirming consistent sightings and signs of reproduction. Together, these developments show that our presence on the water is making a measurable difference. As we move into the holiday season and gather with our families, it is worth remembering that many marine animals live with the same deep bonds. Whales and dolphins are sentient, social, and conscious of what happens around them. They raise young, travel in family groups, and stay connected for life. This is what makes the continued killing in the Faroe Islands so devastating. Entire Pilot whale and dolphin families are driven to shore and killed together. They understand what is happening to them and to their families. It is a brutal reality we have opposed for more than forty years, and ending it will require global pressure on the companies that still support this practice through North Atlantic sourcing. Holland and Barrett’s decision shows that pressure works, and as we move through the holidays and make choices about the food we share, it is worth remembering that every choice has a consequence for the ocean and the families that live in it.
