Families across the country are paying higher energy bills, and it’s not just inflation. Increased energy demand from an influx of data centers and extreme weather has strained our power grids. Instead of stepping up to meet this challenge with affordable, reliable clean energy, utilities across the country are clinging to costly and polluting fossil fuels.
That’s the finding of the Sierra Club’s fifth annual Dirty Truth Report, which exposes how 75 of the nation’s largest utilities are failing to live up to their own climate promises.
Here are some of our biggest takeaways:
⚠️ Collectively, utilities scored just 15 out of 100 -- an “F.”
◀️ 60% made no progress or scored worse than in our first report.
📈 Utilities are still planning 118 GW of new gas plants through 2035 — even more than last year.
😰 At the same time, they’re proposing less new clean energy.
The solution is simple: clean energy is cheaper, healthier, and more reliable than fossil fuels. But utilities can’t have it both ways — making bold climate pledges in press releases while quietly doubling down on coal and gas.
Join us on September 24 for a virtual webinar where we'll show how utility decisions are driving up bills, and share how we can hold them accountable for affordable, reliable clean energy.

Utilities shouldn’t get away with raising bills while blocking the clean energy transition. We deserve better. Utilities must halt plans for new gas plants, retire dirty coal on a clear timeline, and invest in clean, affordable energy that lowers bills and protects our communities.
Together, we can hold utilities accountable and push them toward the affordable, reliable clean energy future we all deserve.
In Solidarity,
Sierra Club
