Hi John,
In less than two weeks, I will stand trial for rescuing four suffering birds from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse in Sonoma County, CA. *My case is featured today in* *The New York Times* ( [link removed] ) *, in an article discussing Direct Action Everywhere’s work to expose the animal cruelty behind “humane” labels.
*
Chickens at Petaluma Poultry’s operations suffer intensive confinement, widespread illness and injury, and then their bodies are covered with humane-washed labels like “organic” and “free-range.”
The New York Times article explains:
“Ms. Rosenberg, 23, says that she found chickens at Petaluma Poultry covered in scratches and bruises, including some with high fevers and serious infections. There was also evidence, she said, that birds were being scalded alive, instead of killed before broiling, because the slaughter lines were moving too quickly.”

The article focuses on the debate around whether more “humane” animal production is good enough, without actually taking a close look at what those “humane” labels really mean for the animals used for profit in these operations. A closer look would show how animal welfare is incompatible with profit-driven exploitation of animals. Petaluma Poultry valued each chicken I rescued at a mere $6 — so it would never be profitable for them to provide the medical care these animals desperately needed. Poppy would not have gotten antibiotics for her respiratory infection and Aster’s infected feet would never have been bandaged.
It’s confusing why the editors of the article chose to show photos from small dairy operations DxE has never investigated but neglected to show photos from Petaluma Poultry. Presumably, Petaluma Poultry declined to be photographed.
As the framing of this article illustrates, most people want to believe in “humane” labels. It’s certainly more comfortable. But by presenting the “radical” idea that animals deserve rights and should never be exploited, we’re sparking a critical conversation. And the more that people discuss it, the more people will come to the difficult, but obvious answer that we must end violence against animals.
Thank you,
Zoe Rosenberg
