Potatoes join this year’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ Dirty Dozen™ list of produce samples found to have the highest level of pesticide residues. The reason: a pesticide banned in Europe was found on 90% of potato samples, even after washing.

The top spot on this year’s Dirty Dozen goes to spinach. It’s packed with nutrients, but also showed more pesticide residues by weight than any other produce. Learn more below:


Pesticides on spinach - Most pesticides by weight of all produce tested. Up to 19 different pesticides found on a single spinach sample. Permethrin: A neurotoxic insecticide banned on food crops in Europe since 2000, found on 76% of spinach samples. DDT: A toxic pesticide banned in the U.S., found on 40% of spinach samples.

The average American eats about eight pounds of fresh strawberries a year – and with them, dozens of pesticides. This popular fruit remains on the Dirty Dozen list because nearly all samples – 99% – had pesticide residues, and 23 different pesticides were detected on a single strawberry sample. Learn more:


Pesticides on strawberries - Carbendazim: Hormone disruptor found on 16% of strawberry samples. Bifenthrin: Possible carcinogen found on 29% of samples. 99% of strawberry samples had pesticide residues. Up to 23 different pesticides were found on a single strawberry sample.
