The U.S. flag was redesigned by a teenager?!It’s true. In 1958, a 17-year-old high school student named Robert Heft turned in a history class project: a new version of the U.S. flag with 50 stars—one for each state, including Hawaii, which hadn’t officially joined yet. His teacher gave him a B–. But after lobbying his congressman, the design was adopted as the official U.S. flag in 1960. That “B–” project is now the longest-used flag design in U.S. history. Flag Day: A Symbol of Service, Sacrifice, and Support

Today, June 14th, we celebrate Flag Day, a holiday that commemorates the adoption of the American flag on this day in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. With 13 stars and stripes to represent the original colonies, the flag has grown alongside our nation—evolving into a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and unity.

Did You Know?

Flag Day was officially established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

The current 50-star version has been in use since 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state.

Though not a federal holiday, Flag Day is celebrated nationwide, and Pennsylvania is the only state that observes it as a state holiday.

But Flag Day is about more than history—it's about the people who serve under that flag today. At Soldiers’ Angels, we are proud to support Service Members, Veterans, and their families who carry the values the flag represents: duty, honor, sacrifice.

Whether it’s sending care packages to deployed troops, distributing food to Veterans in need, or sending handmade items to VA hospitals, our work is fueled by the very ideals the flag embodies. Every gesture of support from our volunteers and donors is a living tribute to what that flag stands for.

This Flag Day, take a moment to reflect—not just on the stars and stripes, but on the men and women behind them. Because when we support them, we’re not just waving the flag—we’re living its promise.
