Hi John ,
Welcome to the latest New Pennsylvania Project newsletter!
As this is our last newsletter ahead of the Juneteenth holiday, we want to take a moment to reflect on the historical significance of the holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates the day, June 19th 1865, when enslaved Black people in Galveston, TX finally learned they were free from chattel slavery - although two years late - post the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth celebrates freedom.
As civil rights icon, Fannie Lou Hamer proclaimed, “None of us are free until all of us are free.”
Happy Juneteenth!
We invite you to read about our work, our upcoming events, and the ways you can safely participate in events happening across Pennsylvania. In Case You Missed It:

What happens when athletes are told to “stick to sports”—but politics won't stick to them?
In Episode 5 of Slingshot The Podcast, hosts Charles and Kadida are joined by Paul “Boo Boo” Palmer, Temple football legend and former NFL running back, for an unfiltered conversation about the inescapable politics of sports, race, and identity.
From his time at Temple and the NFL to deeply personal experiences with racism—including a disturbing piece of LDS literature sent to his college dorm before a game against BYU—Paul reflects on how Black athletes have always been political, even when they didn’t ask to be.
Episode 6 drops Thursday, June 19th!

What does retention election even mean?
PA voters decide whether to keep the current judges on the PA Supreme Court (SCOPA).
These are nonpartisan, yes-or-no votes where voters decide whether a judge should serve another term.
Judges do not face opponents, and their political affiliations are not listed on the ballot. This system aims to insulate judges from political pressures once they are on the bench.

A win for PA voters!
The U.S. Supreme Court just let a key Pennsylvania ruling stand ([link removed][0]=AT23-HzuZWM52XjTv1348FFb9oGWJgt1Nh0nbJh97-5hurTpg1TRKFmYggp6FP0TbknvnczXJpJcsqZ8f6NlMFD9MLlJkPwQjRHz83sUILsClwNLy56yEOUWhuvxppV-_ZXB4rHAv64izcd8OrudBnaVjNwAJwt6Kq5R3cWI22NP-Q2JVUspfKwcbEA62uti5THQRmk8bZQSDuzvY_BGkPFGtJbz&blm_aid=78408): voters can cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots get tossed for technical issues, like missing envelopes.
The Supreme Court has rejected a Republican appeal and left in place a Pennsylvania court decision allowing people to cast provisional ballots when their mail-in votes are rejected for not following technical procedures in state law.
A federal judge Friday issued a second preliminary injunction ([link removed] blocking some provisions of the sweeping executive order on elections that President Donald Trump signed in March.
The judge ([link removed] ruled provisions of Trump’s order on elections exceeded his authority and would cause “irreparable harm” to the states challenging it.
A group of bills ([link removed] at boosting electricity production and regulating clean energy has rare, bipartisan support in Pennsylvania’s divided legislature. But a key GOP leader says he doesn’t plan to consider them until a court issues a final verdict on the long-debated Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI.
The state’s highest court ([link removed] is preparing its ruling on RGGI’s fate after hearing arguments in May. State Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R., Indiana) told Spotlight PA that until a decision is made, his chamber is unlikely to act on energy bills.
Pa. House passes bill to raise the minimum wage ([link removed] The state House voted along party lines Wednesday to raise the minimum wage to $15 for most Pennsylvanians, and to $12 for those working in smaller, rural counties. It’s a significant step in the latest effort by Democrats to get it above the federal rate of $7.25.
