* Take a STOP THE BLEED® class
* Watch an official training video
* Complete the STOP THE BLEED® Quiz
This campaign is only possible because of the incredible network of partners, advocates, and volunteers who give their time, voices, and expertise to advance this mission.

An Incredible STOP THE BLEED® Save During STOP THE BLEED® Month
Authored by: Moravia Fire & Rescue | May 2025
Kevin's story: A Life-Saving Effort, A Life-Changing Day
On May 13th, Moravia Fire and Rescue was dispatched to one of the most critical emergencies we have encountered — a man had been run over by a brush cutter and had lost both of his legs. Eight of our volunteer members dropped what they were doing and responded without hesitation. We knew every second mattered. Uncontrolled bleeding can take a life in minutes, and we were determined not to let that happen.
Even before we arrived, we began preparing — tourniquets were pulled from the jump bags and readied en route. We were told we may not be able to see the patient from the road, but as we approached the scene, we saw something remarkable: the patient, lying in the field, had heard our sirens and mustered the strength to wave us down.
The patient was conscious and incredibly calm despite the traumatic injuries he had sustained. He was able to tell us his name was Kevin. Our EMS crew immediately applied life-saving tourniquets to stop the bleeding. Shortly after, Centerville Fire & Rescue arrived to assist with stabilization. MercyOne Air Med responded quickly from their Knoxville base and transported Kevin to Mercy Des Moines for advanced trauma care.
In the days following the call, the members of Moravia Fire and Rescue found themselves thinking often about Kevin. We searched social media and followed every possible lead, hoping for an update. We wondered if he made it, how he was doing, and what the road ahead looked like for him.
Then, on Monday morning, we received a call from the trauma coordinator at Mercy Des Moines. She began by thanking us for the extraordinary care provided in the field. Then, she gave us the news we had been waiting for — Kevin was doing well. He had made incredible progress and wanted to meet the people who helped save his life.
Later that same day, we dropped everything once again — this time, to go meet Kevin, his wife Bobbie, and his beloved dog Jake in Des Moines. It was an emotional reunion, and one that we will never forget. We spent over two hours together, talking, sharing, and witnessing firsthand the strength and spirit of a man who had every reason to give up — but didn’t.
Kevin shared with us his plans for the future: to get back on the golf course, to build his home, and to move forward with the same calm courage he showed the day we met him. Meeting him was deeply healing for our team, and we believe it was equally meaningful for Kevin. As he told us more than once, “I appreciate everything everyone does. This is your life, but you SAVED mine”
This encounter happened during National EMS Week — and there could not have been a more meaningful way to begin it. It also happens to be National STOP THE BLEED® Month. Moravia Fire and Rescue has taught many STOP THE BLEED® classes over the years, and this call reminds us why we do. In a split second, anyone’s life can change. Knowing how to control life-threatening bleeding can make all the difference.
May 21st is also National Trauma Survivors Day. Fittingly, two of our EMTs were scheduled to donate blood that very same day the call was received. Kevin required more than 28 units of blood during his treatment. Please, if you are able: donate blood. It truly saves lives.
Kevin’s journey is just beginning, but his resilience, optimism, and gratitude have already left a lasting mark on all of us. We are incredibly thankful that he survived. His courage inspires us, and we are honored to have played a role in his survival.
Attached below is the news article covering our meeting with Kevin. We hope his story reminds everyone of the power of emergency response, the importance of training and preparation, and the profound impact of simply being there when someone needs you most. Thank you to Kevin, for allowing us to share his story. 💙
Stay safe — and thank you for continuing to support your local EMS and fire volunteers.

New STOP THE BLEED® Legislation in Missouri
Stop The Bleed Coalition | June 2025
Missouri’s legislation known as the "Stop the Bleed Act", to enhance emergency preparedness in schools by equipping staff and facilities to respond effectively to traumatic bleeding incidents, has passed both the house and senate and is pending the governor’s signature. The "Stop the Bleed Act" is codified in Section 160.485 of the Missouri Revised Statutes. This provision was included in House Bill 416, introduced in 2025, and also featured in Senate Bill 68, an omnibus education bill passed by both legislative chambers in 2025. As of May 2025, SB 68 is awaiting the governor's signature to become law.
Some Important Key Provisions Include:
* Bleeding Control Kits: Schools are required to place bleeding control kits in high-traffic areas such as cafeterias, auditoriums, and vocational classrooms.
* Training Requirements: Each school district and charter school must designate personnel to receive annual training in the use of bleeding control kits. Training covers the application of pressure, dressings, tourniquets, and other bleeding control techniques. Training programs may be conducted by local emergency medical services personnel or other qualified individuals and can include online instruction.
* Protocol Development: The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is tasked with developing a traumatic blood loss protocol by January 1, 2026. This protocol will guide schools in managing incidents involving severe bleeding and must be implemented by the end of the 2025–26 school year.
* Maintenance and Restocking: Bleeding control kits must be inspected annually to ensure that all materials are up-to-date and functional. After each use, kits must be restocked promptly to maintain readiness.
* Liability Protection: School personnel who, in good faith, use a bleeding control kit as provided by the act are granted immunity from civil liability, unless their actions constitute gross negligence or willful misconduct.
We recently had Travis Coleman on the STOP THE BLEED® podcast who helped push this legislation forward. Learn more about the Stop The Bleed Act and Travis’s work by listening to our most recent episode here. ([link removed])
