President's Message Many LGBTQ youth thrive during adolescence, but stigma and discrimination can increase their risk for negative health and life outcomes. Support, inclusion, and understanding make all the difference. NASN believes that to provide culturally competent care, school staff and communities should institute affirming policies that support LGBTQ youth. School nurses are uniquely positioned to help LGBTQ youth by creating LGBTQ-affirming spaces, guiding them toward resources, and advocating for school-wide protections. School nurses deliver care in a manner that promotes and preserves student autonomy, dignity, and rights, providing care in an inclusive and collaborative manner that respects and values diversity within the school community. School nurses promote the equitable treatment of all students, serve as student advocates, and support student rights in navigating the educational environment. This month, and throughout the year, we can choose to actively promote student health, safety, and self-worth and take steps to create inclusive, affirming school communities to improve long-term health and educational outcomes for LGBTQ youth.
