Email from Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty Join the Fight for Religious Freedom: How to Support Spencer Last week, WILL filed a complaint on behalf of Spencer Wimmer, a devout Christian, who was fired by Generac Power Systems, Inc. (“Generac”) after sharing his Christian beliefs on gender identity with his manager and Generac’s HR department. Spencer’s faith does not allow him to deny the existence of two sexes or affirm gender transitions. After Generac learned that his religious beliefs conflicted with the company’s expectation that he refer to transgender employees by their preferred names and pronouns, Spencer was disciplined and terminated—even though Generac had not received any employee complaints about him. WILL Client, Spencer Wimmer, lamented, “Generac considered my Christian beliefs to be harassment of others, despite glowing performance reviews and no complaints of any kind filed against me. I was heartbroken by the way Generac treated me, dismissing my religious convictions simply because they do not agree.” Watch Spencer's story HERE. Listen Here WILL Speaks on Parental Rights' Panel Today, WILL joined the American Enterprise Institute and Alliance Defending Freedom for a panel event, "'The Child is Not the Mere Creature of the State': Pierce v. Society of Sisters at 100." The panel focused on the landmark Pierce decision where the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that “the child is not the mere creature of the State.” The ruling affirmed parents’ right to direct their own children’s education, protected private and religious schools from government oversight, and opened the door for the school choice movement we see today. WILL's Deputy Counsel Luke Berg and Education Counsel Cory Brewer joined the first of two panels to explore Pierce’s enduring significance and the ruling’s implications for classroom practice, parental rights, and the proper role of the state in education.
