Email from Rep. Gonzales Remembering Pope Francis I’m deeply saddened by the news of Pope Francis’ passing. As a lifelong Catholic, one of the most meaningful moments of my life was meeting the Pope. Pope Francis will be remembered for his humility, kindness, and lifelong dedication to the Church and humanity. Ending America's Drug Epidemic I joined thousands of healthcare practitioners at the Rx and Illicit Drug Summit in Nashville this week to discuss Congress's part in stopping the drug epidemic plaguing our country. Supporting law enforcement’s counter-drug trafficking efforts and investments in mental health and addiction services are a key part of solving this problem. Through my seat on the House Appropriations Committee, I've supported and secured funding for these measures to help communities across America combat substance abuse. Soon, the House Appropriations Committee will begin working on all twelve of our funding bills. Curtailing drug trafficking and abuse is a priority for me, and I will continue to advocate for solid policies that improve public safety outcomes. Fighting for Safer Communities After four years of policy failures from the Biden administration, I’m working alongside Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) to codify President Trump’s effective border security policies into law. I've introduced the BE GONE Act, which will provide ICE agents and CBP personnel more tools to identify and deport illegal immigrants with sexual violence charges. For more information on the BE GONE Act, click here. Protecting America's Agriculture Industry A New World screwworm outbreak in the United States could devastate our livestock industry. On Saturday, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins issued a letter to the Mexican government warning that the United States will halt all animal imports from Mexico if they do not begin to cooperate with us to stop the spread of the New World screwworm. This was the right call, and I appreciate Secretary Rollins making this issue a priority. We must invest in eradication efforts—I will continue to fight for our farmers and ranchers through my seat on the House Appropriations Committee. Congressman Gonzales is leading a bipartisan initiative in Congress to expand eradication and containment efforts regarding the New World screwworm. Click here to learn more.
