PARENTING
** Technology isn’t all bad for kids. But it’s definitely not all good either.
------------------------------------------------------------
For one thing, it can be where people show up to take advantage of kids. At Love146, we work with lots of youth who first met their traffickers online, right on their devices.
As a parent, what can you do to prevent this? Keeping kids away from technology altogether probably isn’t the answer as they get older. Let’s be real. Kids are smart, and teens especially will find a way to get online if they want to. I know that’s how I was!
What really helps keep them safe is knowing they can come to you – their parent. If they think you’ll just freak out or take everything away, they’re less likely to tell you when something’s wrong.
So learn the apps together. Talk about warning signs of something being sketchy. Set limits on things like screen time or who they talk to. In short: Build their skills. Having open conversations about technology and the thoughts, relationships, and habits surrounding it will help kids use it with confidence, awareness, and good judgment.
