Hi John,
The fight to save the thousands of beagles suffering at Ridglan Farms just gained national attention. This morning, The Washington Post, the third largest newspaper in the United States, published a scathing piece ( [link removed] ) about the U.S. dog experimentation industry. It discusses the successful legal case against research beagle breeder Ridglan Farms led by animal rights activists and the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project ( [link removed] ) (AALDP), which provides expert legal services for our movement. AALDP also played a major role in getting this piece published.
*Ridglan Farms—once protected while DxE activists faced prosecution for rescuing abused beagles—is now under criminal investigation.* A Dane County, Wisconsin judge appointed a special prosecutor to investigate animal cruelty allegations following damning testimony from veterinarians and former employees. This landmark decision could finally shut down one of the nation's last remaining breeders of beagles for experimentation.
Today's opinion piece about this historic case was co-authored by the one and only Jane Goodall, world-renowned expert on animal behavior, and professor emeritus Marc Bekhoff, an award-winning researcher in the field of animal behavior. They write:
"Dogs in the experimentation industry are routinely mutilated. Sometimes their vocal cords are cut so that their barking will not disturb animal experimenters. One of the most egregious revelations to emerge from Ridglan is its practice of “cherry-eye removal” surgery. Current and former Ridglan employees say these have for years routinely been conducted by non-veterinarians and without supervision. The dogs are restrained while an overgrown gland is crudely cut off the dog’s eye, with little — and, often, no — anesthesia, pain relief, bleeding control or after care."

Activists, attorneys, former Ridglan employees, and leading experts in the field of animal behavior are joining forces to expose Ridglan's abuse of beagles -- and to call for an end to animal experimentation.
*Together, we can keep the pressure on to shut down Ridglan Farms* and create a domino effect to end the ineffective and inhumane industry of animal experimentation altogether. But we have to keep the pressure on.
