“Extreme fire danger, 50 mph gusts aim for South Texas Tuesday,” San Antonio Express-News' Anthony Franze — “A strong low pressure system is moving over the Desert Southwest Monday, heading east toward the Lone Star State. This weather system will provide the energy necessary to initiate strong thunderstorms [ [link removed] ] in parts of North and East Texas, as well as create extreme fire danger across much of South-Central and West Texas.
The weather system will send a strong Pacific cold front through the region early Tuesday morning. [ [link removed] ] This front will not affect temperatures in a major way, but it will bring very strong wind speeds, along with exceptionally dry air into San Antonio on Tuesday. Together, that's a recipe for extreme fire danger.
This is not to be taken lightly. The National Weather Service said in their area forecast discussion on Monday afternoon [ [link removed] ] that "Tuesday will feature the most extreme fire danger experienced across South Central Texas in years."
A broken line of showers and storms may occur near the San Antonio area during the predawn hours Tuesday, mainly between 4 and 8 a.m. Overall rain chances are only 20%, so most areas will stay completely dry. Higher storm chances are expected well to the north and east of San Antonio.
The front will crash into San Antonio between 6 and 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Winds will strengthen behind the front, bringing dry air into the city. Sustained wind speeds of 25 to 35 mph are expected in San Antonio through the middle of the day. Gusts will be even stronger, reaching 45 to 55 mph at times.
The westerly winds will cause humidity values to plummet between 5 to 15% through much of the afternoon. That, along with the strong winds, will result in extreme fire danger across South Texas. Temperatures will also be warm, topping out in the mid- to upper 70s.
A red flag warning has been issued for all of South-Central Texas, as well as much of West Texas and the Panhandle. The high fire danger warning will stay in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday night.
Any fires that develop could spread extremely fast and be very difficult to control. You should avoid any outdoor burning throughout the day on Tuesday. In addition, be sure to keep vehicles off of dry grass, dispose of cigarettes property, and be sure to only use grills or smokers on paved or gravel surfaces." SAEN [ [link removed] ] ($)
