Dear Granite City Neighbors,?
The sun is shining, school is out, and the legislative session is adjourned. I hope you and yours are enjoying this beautiful start to summer!
Personally, my summer could not be off to a better start. I?m ecstatic to share that I recently asked my girlfriend Erika to marry me, and she said yes!
I shared our story and engagement photos with Kelly Cordes of WJON, you can read all the details here [ [link removed] ]. Our family is truly blessed!
Ok, now that I shared my glorious personal news, back to business.
Even though committee meetings and floor debates are done for the year, I never stop working for you. This time when I?m back in St. Cloud, talking to our neighbors and community leaders, is often when I get the best ideas for legislation to carry. Productive legislative sessions are built during the interim!?
Here?s your latest update:

*Retaining Police Officers*
Minnesota is currently experiencing a law enforcement workforce crisis that poses a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities. We are heading down a workforce, public safety cliff, and it?s going to take new ideas to ensure we have the number of police officers we need to keep Minnesotans safe.?
That?s why I?m working on legislation to allow officers who hit their retirement age of 55 to stay on the job, continue to earn their salary, AND be able to draw on their pension without penalty.?
I?m proud to author this legislation in partnership with the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, and Law Enforcement Labor Services.?
Police Hearing
With 2,000+ police retirements coming in the next two years, we need to pass this bill! It is a strong solution to encourage seasoned professionals to continue to work, while enriching the skill and knowledge pool within agencies, leading to improved public safety outcomes for our communities.
I recently spoke with KSTP about my legislation, and you can watch their coverage here.

Let?s ensure police departments have the officers they need to keep our communities safe!

*?From the Capitol? Radio Interview*
On this week?s show with Kelly Cordes of WJON, we started on a lighted-hearted note with the story of my proposal to Erika. We then had a substantive discussion about legislation focused on ensuring all of Minnesota's students, from kindergarten to college, have access to food. You can't learn on an empty stomach, and I'm extremely proud of the laws I've helped pass to banish hunger from our classrooms!?
You can listen to this week?s conversation here [ [link removed] ].?

You can tune in every week to hear me on WJON, Wednesdays at 10:40am.

*Free Park Day - June 8*
If you?re looking for something to do this weekend, check out Minnesota?s next Free Park Day [ [link removed] ] this Saturday, June 8th - no vehicle permits needed! Minnesota state parks are open year-round, and there's a state park within 30 miles of most Minnesotans. The closest ones to St. Cloud are Lake Maria State Park and Charles Lindbergh State Park.
With a free day each season, it's a great opportunity to get out there and explore someplace new - or visit an old favorite at a new time of year! Whether you stay the whole weekend or just spend a few hours outside, you'll make memories that will last a lifetime. Find a state park near you using the DNR?s ParkFinder tool [ [link removed] ].
