What We're Up To

Get excited – we’re gearing up for our annual New Liberal Action Summit in DC, which has been rescheduled from its original dates in May, and will now take place in June - expect an email from us with more details on how to register and apply for scholarships tomorrow!

We’re also excited to announce that on April 24th at 8PM EST/5PM PST, the CNL Twitch stream will be returning, with special guest and card-carrying New Liberal, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-50). RSVP here [[link removed]] for this live stream that will feature a great conversation around recent permitting reform legislation, the upcoming election, and more.

Our Chapters have also been doing some great work this past month advocating for pro-growth policies and center-left candidates:

*The Seattle New Liberals are leading an open letter [[link removed]] to Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell demanding a revised comprehensive plan after the city put forward a less-than-ideal plan last month that would severely limit the city’s ability to build more housing.

*The NYC New Liberals officially joined the Yes to Housing Coalition [[link removed]], which is a coalition of 100+ organizations in NYC demanding a thoughtful and comprehensive reform agenda to help address New York City’s housing crisis.

*The Huntsville New Liberals canvassed for Marilyn Lands who won the Alabama House District 10 Special Election, flipping a Republican-held district that Trump won in 2020.

*The Bay Area New Liberals put out a statement [[link removed]] on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voting to repeal the veto for Supervisor Aaron Peskin’s anti-housing ordinance.

*After months of working with a broad coalition to oppose an attempt to move the Capitals and Wizards arena from D.C. to Potomac Yard in Virginia using taxpayer month, the D.C. New Liberals found success after Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson ended his efforts in support of relocating the arena. Read their statement here. [[link removed]]

DIPLOMATS - Key Takeaways from COP28 [[link removed]]
By Imran Khan, Dhaka New Liberals | January, 2024

“While the big takeaway from COP28 will be that countries have come up with a deal that calls for them to transition away from fossil fuels while acknowledging the need for a “deep, rapid” reduction in emissions, the weak language is at complete odds with the official global stocktake.”

Bridges Podcast - MrBeast Wanted 10k! AOC Jealousy in Congress & The Issue w/ Democrats [[link removed]]
Ft. Jeremiah Johnson, Co-Founder of CNL | March 2nd, 2024

“We used to have much more competitive races and now we don’t. I think that’s a problem because when you have these highly gerrymandered districts where more and more people are safe. That means more and more people in Congress can be extreme.”

POLITICO - The Future Stays out of the 2024 Spotlight [[link removed]]
Ft. Jeremiah Johnson, Co-Founder of CNL | March 6th, 2024

“It’s not just how much we are cracking down on Big Tech, it’s why we’re cracking down on Big Tech — in service of questionable-at-best antitrust theories, or in service of culture war grievances.”
American Purpose - Ugh, Capitalism [[link removed]]
By Jeremiah Johnson, Co-Founder of CNL | March 20th, 2024

“If you want a wealthier, freer, more prosperous, and more just future, then you need to understand how we developed our current levels of wealth and freedom.”

LAist - With No Easy Solutions to Get More Family-Sized Housing Build in LA, Is Public Housing an Option? [[link removed]]
Ft. Thomas Irwin, LA New Liberals | March 27th, 2024

“People who bought 20 or 30 years ago, they are doing OK — their homes have appreciated a lot in price,” Irwin said. “For us who are younger, under the age of 40, who didn't have that opportunity, there's just no way those types of homes are going to go down in price to a degree that they're going to be affordable.”

Liberal Currents - A City of Liberalism Means Becoming a City of Yes [[link removed]]
By Nick Felker, NYC New Liberals | March 28th, 2024

“More affordable units will be critical in curbing the trend of displacement and allowing us to provide a true housing-first policy toward ending homelessness.”

What We're Reading

Cap Action | Trump's Tariff Would Cost the Typical American Household Roughly $1,500 Each Year [[link removed]]
Brendan Duke

This great piece from Brendan Duke at the Center for American Progress takes a look at recent proposals from former President Trump, who is calling for a 10% tariff on all imported goods if he is re-elected. Duke’s analysis of this proposal finds that it would increase costs for American families across the board. Protectionist policies that inhibit the free flow of goods will only be bad for voters, and we can only hope that voters reject Trump and his extreme ideas in November.

The Economist | Why Japan Inc is No Longer in Thrall to America [[link removed]]

This interesting piece from The Economist takes a look at a comparison of Japanese and American economies, and the changes they’ve undergone in recent years. After years of protectionist policies that slowed growth in Japan to a halt, they’ve recently begun to open up, while at the same time, America is doing the reverse, by employing protectionism in the name of protecting workers, and adopting industrial policies that defined Japan’s stagnant economy.

NPR | What's at Stake in the Supreme Court Mifepristone Case [[link removed]]
Selena Simmons-Duffin

This piece from NPR dives into the potential repercussions of FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine , a Supreme Court case that could restrict access to mifepristone, a medication used for abortion. The Supreme Court’s ruling on this case could interfere with access to medication abortion, miscarriage care, and the pharmaceutical industry. We’re watching this case because a ruling to restrict access to mifepristone would not only be blatantly illiberal, it would hurt millions of women across the country, and make the abortion issue even more relevant heading into November.

Should Puerto Rico Be a State? Ft. George Laws Garcia [[link removed]]

Puerto Ricans got US citizenship more than 100 years ago. But despite a century of being American, Puerto Rico still isn't a state. George Laws Garcia joins the podcast to make the case for Puerto Rican statehood. We talk about Puerto Rico's history and how they ended up in this situation, the effect of not being a state on Puerto Rico's economy, and whether there's a realistic path to statehood any time soon.

How Abortion Impacts the 2024 Election Ft. Grace Panetta [[link removed]]
Since the Supreme court reversed Roe v Wade, abortion and reproductive rights have been a dominant topic in American politics. How will they impact the 2024 elections? Political reporter Grace Panetta joins the podcast to discuss the states with abortion on the ballot this November, how the parties will try to message their positions to voters, and why Trump doesn't have a clear stance on abortion.

Will North Carolina Flip in 2024? Ft. Blair Reeves [[link removed]]

North Carolina's been a red state since Barack Obama won in 2008. But it's edging closer and closer to swing-state status. Blair Reeves, executive director of Carolina Forward, joins the podcast to discuss North Carolina's prospects in the 2024 elections. We talk about whether North Carolina is a swing state or not, the state's gerrymander, the statewide races that matter, and how Democrats should message to win North Carolina voters.

Closing Remarks

The 2024 primary season has kicked into full gear and the general election continues to get closer every month. There’s a lot at stake in this year’s election , and it’s more important than ever for all of us to do the work to continue advancing our pragmatic agenda in our local communities and get people to the ballot box in November.

If you aren’t already involved, we encourage you to get more involved with your local CNL chapter, and consider joining their leadership team! Not sure if you have a chapter in your area? Check out the chapter map on our website to find your local chapter.
