Did you know that a single load of laundry can release up to 18 million microfibers!?

These tiny fibers are released into the environment, the air we breathe, and the agricultural lands where our food is grown. That's why we're co-sponsoring AB 1628 (McKinnor) -- a California bill that would require microfiber-catching filters on new washing machines. Solutions should always be grounded in science, and our own Director of Science published research showing the efficacy of filtration.

Washing machine filters are a near-term, proven solution that is relatively cost- and energy-efficient, with the potential to dramatically reduce the amount of microfibers entering the environment. As 5 Gyres continues to shift our focus toward microfibers and textiles in the coming years, we hope this will be the first of many solutions that address the global harm caused by the plastics and fashion industries.
