Throughout my career in politics, I’ve watched as the malign influence of “dark money” has grown stronger and stronger. This corrupt practice of campaigns hiding where their funding comes from is strongly opposed by the American public -- whatever their politics.

Across the country, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike strongly believe they should have a right to know who is funding political campaign ads. That’s why I’m reaching out to you today -- to ask for your support for a critical effort to restore transparency and accountability to our political system.

To take action on this issue, I’ve co-sponsored a vital piece of legislation in the Senate called the Disclose Act. If passed, it would expose the dark money that influences our elections, ensuring that every American is aware of the sources behind political spending. Here’s exactly what it would accomplish:

Prohibit
domestic
companies
with
significant
foreign
control,
ownership,
or
direction
from
spending
money
in
U.S.
elections.

2.
Create
a
"stand
by
your
ad"
provision,
requiring
leaders
of
corporations,
unions,
and
other
organizations
to
take
responsibility
for
political
ads
by
including
a
disclaimer
in
the
ad.

3.
Crack
down
on
the
use
of
shell
corporations
to
hide
the
identity
of
donors
by
requiring
companies
spending
money
in
elections
to
disclose
their
true
owners.

The success of this legislation is crucial to the health of our democracy. By shedding light on the sources of political spending, we can empower voters to make informed decisions and hold our elected representatives accountable.
