Dear allies,

This Women’s History Month, and every month, we honor women’s fundamental role in our movements for a voice at work, a healthy environment, and dignified lives for all people. From the women mill workers of Lowell ([link removed]) , to racial and economic justice leader Melnea Cass ([link removed]) , to the many organizers leading our movements today, women have been fundamental to winning a better Massachusetts for working people.

Below you will find opportunities to engage and continue the fight on many issues that affect our communities and allies. Please spread the word by sharing our Facebook ([link removed]-) posts as well as following and retweeting us on Twitter ([link removed]) . You can sign up here ([link removed]) to receive regular updates from CLU.

Campaign Updates

MBTA riders need a low-income fare NOW!
The Public Transit Public Good coalition is encouraged that Governor Healey has included $5 million in her budget to advance a low-income fare at the MBTA ([link removed]) . This funding proposal is an important step forward in creating a public transit system that is accessible to all, regardless of people’s income level.

For too many Massachusetts residents, the cost of public transit is a significant financial burden, making it difficult to access basic necessities such as school, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. A low-income fare will provide people with a more affordable option for transportation, allowing them to save money and improve their quality of life. By including funding for a low-income fare program in her budget, Governor Healey is helping us take the next steps to create a more safe, equitable, and accessible transportation system for all riders. We look forward to working with Governor Healey, legislators, and MBTA officials to ensure a low-income fare is available to qualified riders on all modes.

Take action to win a low-income fare with Public Transit Public Good ([link removed]) .

Gov. Healey proposes fare cuts for low-income MBTA riders ([link removed])
NBC Boston – 3/7/23
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey is taking her first steps toward fulfilling a campaign pledge to create discounted fares for low-income riders who rely on public transportation. A $5 million line item in Healey's proposed 2024 fiscal year budget would let the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority begin laying the groundwork for a means-tested fare program.

State budget puts $1.5B toward transportation, targets MBTA hiring woes ([link removed])
Boston Herald – 3/1/23
Gov. Maura Healey’s first state budget does not provide funding to hire 1,000 new MBTA workers, as promised in her inaugural address, but does include resources to look into free or reduced fares and a Red-Blue Line connector.

Introducing our new staff member, Helen Barrios
Our team is expanding! Recently, Care That Works and Building Pathways welcomed Helen Barrios, the new Care That Works Program Coordinator.

Helen Barrios is a first-generation Guatemalan with a passion for community work. She brings her background in the building trades, as well as her extensive experience with young children as a Kindergarten Teacher, Nanny, and Au Pair, to our team. As our new Care That Works Program Coordinator, Helen will help us expand outreach to increase the number of families and providers offering early morning child care, a lack of which can often be a barrier to those looking to enter the trades.

We are excited to welcome Helen, and we look forward to collaborating with her to further our shared mission of diversifying the union building trades and making them a more accessible career path.
