John,

On International Women’s Day, I’m thinking about resettled refugees from Afghanistan, many of them women who fought the Taliban alongside U.S. forces.

As we all know, the Taliban has a history of brutally oppressing women. Some women in Afghanistan decided to fight back several years ago, enlisting in the Afghan military’s Female Tactical Platoon, which participated in some of the most daring, high-risk missions against the Taliban.

When the U.S. left Kabul, 39 members of the platoon were evacuated. Now, several of them live here in our district, along with hundreds of other resettled Afghan refugees. Their lives are no longer in danger — the Taliban can’t hurt them here — but every day they face the pain of the mission they could not accomplish: securing peace, safety, and freedom for millions of other women and girls in Afghanistan.

I had the honor of meeting some of these remarkable women recently when I was in Clarkston to announce $400,000 in funding I was able to secure for GSU’s Community-Based English program. Helping resettled refugees learn English will empower them to take the next steps in their lives, wherever those steps may lead them. What’s next for these young women is up to them. But I want to make sure they have the tools and resources to decide for themselves.

While celebrating the achievements of women across the world, we also recognize and affirm the equality of women in a world still dominated by men. Women across the world face oppression every day. Even here in America, women’s rights are moving in the wrong direction. We need to dedicate ourselves to equality not just on International Women’s Day, but every day.
