Dear John,

The fight for women’s rights is a constant uphill battle all over the world. A battle that we, as Greens, will never give up on.

Today on International Women’s Day, I continue fighting alongside my progressive colleagues to enshrine the right to abortion within the French constitution. This ensures that this right, which has been acquired after long struggles, remains protected. Indeed, hard-won women’s rights continue to be attacked by conservatives all over the world trying to control women’s bodies and freedoms.

But today, I want to shine a light on another fight which should not be forgotten: the struggle of Iranian women for freedom and human rights.

Iranian women, supported by allies across Iranian society, rose to protest in September 2022 after the murder Mahsa Amini by the Iranian police. Mahsa is a victim of a regime which negates to an extreme extent not only the rights of women to bodily autonomy but also all their human rights! Several hundred women and protesters have been killed by the regime since Mahsa’s murder.

While the protests have fallen out of the public eye, the situation of Iranian women hasn’t improved.

Recent shocking reports of ever more barbaric attacks on women’s rights and their bodies recently emerged. Hundreds of young schoolgirls across the country have been poisoned and taken to the hospital. Beyond the absolute horror of these poisoning attacks, this is another attempt to stop any progress in women’s rights by creating fear towards their educational environment.

Shutting down education for girls is the number one textbook method to prevent any progress towards gender equality.

As Greens, we have always been in the forefront of all feminist battles. Iranian women and women all over the world are more than ever a proof that Marie Shear’s famous quote “feminism is this radical notion that women are people” is still a battleground we need to engage in.

We fight for a world where women can fully exercise the right to bodily autonomy, equality, education and freedom.

A world where all women are safe from all form of violence, oppression and discrimination.

A world where effective gender equality is achieved.

We will continue fighting tirelessly for this world to happen, starting with Europe.

We will continue to fight for a Europe that defends women’s rights across the world. A Europe that effectively stands and supports Iranian women and schoolgirls.
