City Limits Expands to Support In-Depth Reporting on Housing, Climate and NYCHA

Dear friends,

We recently hired three reporters to further expand our housing, climate and NYCHA coverage at this pivotal moment for New York, as the city emerges from the pandemic amidst a housing affordability crisis and a rising homeless shelter population.

Mariana Simões joined us in January reporting for the climate and environment beat, City on the Edge. Simões is a Brazilian investigative journalist covering climate, politics and urban issues in Brazil and the United States. Her work has appeared in global outlets like The New York Times, The Economist, Vice, Aljazeera, USA Today and others.

Tatyana Turner is a Bronx native who began covering our new NYCHA beat in February. Turner was most recently a breaking news and general assignment reporter for the Chicago Tribune, where she covered the city’s food and restaurant scene. Before that, she was a corps member with Report for America at the Baltimore Sun, where she reported on African American neighborhoods for the paper’s “Black Life and Culture” beat.
I am keenly aware of the hardships and the hidden gems that reside within public housing. There are at least 339,000 stories within a city of 8 million people that I am eager to have the opportunity to tell. - Tatyana Turner
Emma Whitford joined City Limits as senior housing reporter at the end of February. Whitford was most recently a senior reporter for Law360, where she covered housing and real estate, including reporting on New York housing courts and the state’s handling of its pandemic rent relief program. Whitford was previously a reporter at Gothamist and has freelanced extensively, with bylines in the New York Daily News, The Intercept, Curbed, TIME, Documented NY and the Queens Daily Eagle.

Today our work matters like never before, but as a nonprofit news organization, we lack the resources of a larger publication. Our talented team of journalists provide a critical service, and we need you to step up for us today and support our work. Will you support our important local independent journalism?
Thank you for your support and readership.
