MEDICAID UPDATE: NC legislators announce agreement to expand Medicaid

Folks — I’m relieved that after more than a decade of callousness and indifference, Republicans in the state legislature have finally agreed to a framework for Medicaid expansion. Now, we need them to get to work and pass this legislation IMMEDIATELY.

Here’s the deal: At the end of the month, 300,000 North Carolinians currently on Medicaid could lose that coverage.

If the legislature expands Medicaid before that deadline, not only will those folks be able to stay on Medicaid, but as many as 600,000 additional North Carolinians would become eligible for health care coverage through the program.

Look, every one of us deserves the care we need to stay healthy. That shouldn’t be up for debate. Medicaid expansion will also be good for our economy; we can create jobs, open rural health centers, and save our state money. In fact, we’re actually losing money because we haven’t expanded Medicaid yet!
