THE WEEK'S BIG 3

A Michigan man allegedly plotted to kill the Michigan Attorney General and other members of the state government who are Jewish. Hundreds of newspapers around the country announced that they would no longer publish "Dilbert" after cartoonist Scott Adams made racist comments during a livestream of his YouTube show. A new report from ADL shows that right-wing extremists continue to be responsible for the vast majority of extremist-related deaths in the United States.

Michigan AG says she was among those targeted in threat to kill Jewish members of state government

“A Michigan man allegedly threatened on social media to kill Jewish members of the Michigan government, the FBI said, and state Attorney General Dana Nessel says she was among those targeted. The incident adds to recent concerns about threats against public officials as well as reports of increasing antisemitic incidents across the country. It also evokes the plot to kidnap Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as well as the at-times threatening demonstrations against Covid-19 protocols in the state.” CNN: FULL STORY

Distributor, newspapers drop 'Dilbert' comic strip after creator's racist rant

“The distributor of Scott Adams' Dilbert comic strip, Andrews McMeel Universal, announced Sunday it was severing ties with the cartoonist. This came after Adams urged white people "to get the hell away from Black people" during a racist rant on his online video program last week, during which he labeled Black people a "hate group. The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and other newspapers across the country had already announced they would no longer carry the syndicated comic strip.” NPR: FULL STORY

+ADL Tweet:  It's disturbing to see Musk attempt to defend Scott Adams' racist remarks. As arguably one of the most visible public figures in America & owner of a large social media platform, his words carry tremendous weight. He should condemn bigotry, not defend it.

Underrecognized: Extremist murders are usually from right-wing actors

“Research has shown, though, that it’s right-wing ideologies that are far more likely to be behind deadly acts of violence. And other research has shown that most Americans think of extremist violence in inaccurately bipartisan terms. Data released by the ADL last week shows the reality. Over the past decade (the period included in YouGov’s poll), 96 percent of incidents in which extremists killed someone were committed by people motivated by right-wing ideologies. More than three-quarters of the resulting deaths — 335 of 444 — were linked to right-wing actors.” The Washington Post: FULL STORY

+ ADL Tweet: In the past decade, 75% of extremist-related murders have been carried out by right-wing extremists, and the number of extremist-related mass killings is on the rise. ADL’s @orensegal spoke with @DeadlineWH about these alarming findings.
