Friend, I know we wrote to you about this yesterday, but it means a lot to me that our campaign has earned the endorsement of End Citizens United. We have to change the way we do politics in this country. There is simply too much power in the hands of too few.
To fix our democracy and end the corrosive, damaging influence of corporate corruption in Congress, we can't wait for Citizens United to be reversed. That's why I've been out on the trail talking about my plan: the Tax the PACs Act.
This bill would eliminate the tax-exempt status of corporate PACs and any 501(c) entity that spends more than ten percent of its total revenue on political activities. It would tax their revenue by 70 to 90 percent, and it would use that revenue to help the American people by funding a public campaign finance system.
The NRA is a prime example of the kind of organization that has moved beyond any "charitable mission" and has become a political funding conduit. Its spending serves no purpose other than to enrich its executives and boost the bottom line of Ackerman McQueen, an advertising company that runs the NRA TV video channel. The Tax the PACs Act would properly define the NRA for what it is, tax it, and give us revenue that can be used to make a positive difference.
Congress is supposed to represent people -- actual human beings with bills to pay, healthcare costs, and dreams to pursue. PACs, lobbies, corporations, special interests, and joint committees that only care about the next election are not people. And Texas deserves a representative who is fighting for people, not money.
We've come so far running a campaign that is truly funded by the people. With just 40 days until the primary, we need to keep pushing forward. Can I count on you to help with a grassroots donation? We're making critical investments in GOTV these next few weeks, and the more we raise now, the faster we can move.
Thank you,
Julie
