See if North Carolina’s leaders in Congress voted to protect our health, air, and water in LCV’s 2022 National Environmental Scorecard » [link removed]

John,

I don't have to tell you 2022 was an exceptionally productive year in the pro-environment, pro-democracy-led US House and Senate. To fully grasp how our elected officials led — or refused to lead — us through this historic time, our partners at the national LCV just released their 2022 National Environmental Scorecard! » [link removed]

Knowing how our elected officials vote is core to a functioning democracy and protecting our planet. It’s the first step in what we call the cycle of accountability. LCV tallied last year’s most critical environmental votes in Congress, so you can know exactly how your senators and your representative voted on issues that impact our communities.

To make sure North Carolina’s leaders step up to fight for us, it’s critical that dedicated advocates like you know how those leaders voted on our behalf. And it’s even more important we share that information with others.

This year’s Scorecard includes dozens of votes on other impactful climate and environmental bills, in addition to a number of votes on legislation that would strengthen democracy.

This LCV's Scorecard scored a total of 23 Senate votes and 19 House votes, including:

-The Inflation Reduction Act (LCV scored this bill twice to reflect its importance)
-Sen. Manchin's permitting rollback
-Big Oil price gouging
-Marriage and reproductive rights
-Judicial confirmations

Scoring the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) twice was a first for this year’s Scorecard, but not the only first. For the first time ever, LCV’s Scorecard included votes in both chambers to protect same-sex and interracial marriages, as well as reproductive rights. LCV is committed to safeguarding equity, and the House vote that failed to protect access to reproductive healthcare serves as a reminder that basic human rights are under threat from Republicans and the Supreme Court’s extremist majority.

As in recent years, the Scorecard also includes votes on democracy issues, including votes to advance and confirm historic, personally, and professionally diverse judicial nominees. This includes the vote to confirm Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman on the Supreme Court.

We also scored votes on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a bill that would restore much-needed voter protections, including against discrimination targeting voters of color, and the DISCLOSE Act, a campaign finance reform bill that would provide for greater and faster public disclosure of federal campaign spending and “dark money” contributions. Though both bills passed the House and received majority support in the Senate, they could not overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold, underscoring the partisan divide between Democrats who champion policies that would strengthen and protect our nation’s democracy, and Republicans who seek to undermine our electoral systems and weaken voting rights.
