ICYMI: Last week, I sat down with Rita Braver on CBS Sunday Morning to talk about the state of our movement five years since the shooting at my high school in Parkland.

It was powerful to talk about the Parkland tragedy with Rita, and the journey it sparked for me and many of my classmates. It felt important, too, to talk about the guilt I feel sometimes when shootings still happen, like in Uvalde, Texas. There’s still just so much more work to do.

But there are also so many reasons for hope — I told Rita about the 250 laws we’ve passed around the country since Parkland, including a law in Florida that makes it possible to disarm people who make threats and plans to harm themselves or others. My own family used the law we passed in Florida when a man-made death threats to my mom, and it very well might have saved her life.
