Team,

Over the past days I’ve been reflecting on the news of a former President – Jimmy Carter – and our current President, Joe Biden. These leaders served in the White House forty years apart, but their respective commitment to democracy, the American people, and all of humanity is an inspiration.

Learning that former-President Carter has entered hospice care at age 96 is sad, but also a recognition of a long, robust, and meaningful life. As governor of Georgia, President of the United States, and honored elder statesman whose commitment to mankind has been a blessing to millions, Jimmy Carter has always been a humble public servant.

In 1982, after leaving the White House, Mr. Carter established the Carter Center which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for work promoting peace abroad. Jimmy Carter spent most of his life working for peace and that has been a blessing for us all.

President Biden’s visit to Kyiv, Ukraine was a brave act of solidarity with the Ukrainian people after they’ve suffered one year of brutal war and countless atrocities at the hands of Vladimir Putin and Russia’s military. I am so proud of President Biden’s commitment to standing up for democracy in the face of totalitarianism.

The entire continent of Europe is united and the U.S. is standing strong to reduce human suffering, maintain Ukraine’s sovereignty, and champion democracy.

President Carter and President Biden have shown that the United States can be a force for advancing humanity, justice, and democracy in the world, and I’m proud to stand with them.

Thank you,

Rep. Betty McCollum
