DeKalb County’s in the spotlight again, John. Why? For embarrassing Kelly Loeffler and standing up to her attempts to suppress the vote in a predominantly Black part of the state.

Loeffler is upset because DeKalb County has accepted outside funding from an established group that seeks to help local governments run smoother elections. Apparently, she doesn’t want elections to run smoothly in DeKalb County because that would empower more voters to get to the polls — which, in turn, would threaten the Republican stranglehold on Georgia’s state government.

What’s even worse is that Loeffler is claiming that DeKalb’s acceptance of funding was illegal under Georgia’s SB 202, the voter suppression bill that Gov. Kemp led through the GOP legislature and signed into law after President Biden’s victory (nationwide AND in Georgia) over Donald Trump in 2020.

As completely backwards and harmful as SB 202 is, DeKalb is not in violation, because the law does not prohibit counties from accepting funding of this sort. Loeffler is acting in bad faith, trying to sharpen SB 202’s teeth even beyond what the legislature intended. That’s earned her a callout from us.

Because Worst Behavior Watch is located in Georgia’s 4th District, which includes much of DeKalb County, this is personal to us. We’ll end with a quote from DeKalb Elections Board Chairwoman Dele Lowman Smith, in response to Loeffler’s allegations and calling her out on not understanding state law: “Since Ms. Loeffler was unsuccessful in using her own Zuckerberg-sized net worth to buy a U.S. Senate seat, perhaps she should consider using it to hire better attorneys.”
