Friend,

The NRA’s deadly and ludicrous adage “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” puts our children in danger, and it’s pushing guns closer and closer to every space they spend their time. Case in point: Yet another school district in Pennsylvania has approved the use of military-style rifles – AR15’s – by their security guards, this time in Altoona. (1)

We know that even with police or security nearby, a mass shooting can still happen, as it did in Uvalde and Parkland and too many places to name. Weapons of war do not belong in our schools. Help us stop this trend and push back against the gun lobby’s extremist vision where everyone is armed.

The actual best way to protect children is to keep guns away from the people who would threaten them in the first place. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in Pennsylvania, more than cancer, car accidents, and suffocations or drownings. (2) An average of 118 children and teens are lost to gun violence each year in Pennsylvania, and 63% are homicides. (3)

The last place we need more guns – especially weapons of war – is in our schools. Altoona Area School District leaders weren't the first to arm security guards with AR-15’s. They followed the Pittston Area School District, which enabled more guns in schools in 2022. (4) Where will be next? Help us fight this growing trend by supporting our work.

Sincerely,
Adam Garber
