John,
House Republicans have introduced a bill that would abolish the Department of Education.
I wish this weren't true, but it's real: The bill's one sentence long, and it states "The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2023."
🤦🏾♂️.
Education, and our kids, are the reason I got into this work. They're at the core of everything I do. And as one of the few educators — and the only former principal — in Congress, I take this extremely seriously.
This is part of an all-out attack on public education in our country by the GOP. States are banning books, passing restrictive “Don't Say Gay” laws to go after LGBTQ+ teachers and students, and banning African American History classes. They're creating a fake panic about “critical race theory” to censor curricula. Luckily, this bill probably will not pass the Senate, but it's clear that the anti-education extremists are now driving the Republican agenda.
We need to be giving our schools and our teachers MORE support. Supporting our kids is my life's work, and John, they're my priority in Congress. While the other side is trying to destroy education, I'm writing legislation like the Green New Deal for Public Schools to make sure that our public schools are the best they can be.
Thanks for your support.
Peace and love,
Jamaal Bowman
