I’m excited to update you on my work in Washington, D.C. and the First District of Kansas. It is an honor to represent Kansans in the Big First District in the 118th Congress. I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America – I serve to fight and work to make it stronger, and I believe our brightest days are yet to come. Yours in service,   Mann.House.Gov In the Office Celebrating National FFA Week February 18-25, 2023 is National FFA Week. This week is a chance to celebrate FFA, our country’s premier youth development organization, where young people acquire the skills required for leadership, careers in food and agriculture, and civic engagement. My time as an FFA member and agricultural education student prepared me for life in more ways than I ever imagined. I learned problem-solving, teamwork, servant leadership, and even the parliamentary procedure I use today in Congress. Most of all, my FFA experience deepened my respect and admiration for the producers who feed, fuel and clothe the world. Designating National FFA Week Today, I led 80 of my colleagues in introducing a bipartisan resolution designating February 18-25 as National FFA Week. This resolution recognizes the important role that FFA plays in developing the next generation of leaders in food and agriculture and celebrates the 90th anniversary of the iconic FFA jacket. Right now, hundreds of thousands of FFA members in Kansas and across the country are celebrating the time-honored tradition of National FFA Week. They’re hosting events to thank their teachers and local farmers, volunteering in and serving their communities, and recruiting their peers to join them as members of our country’s premier youth development organization. As a past chapter FFA officer from Quinter, Kansas, proud FFA alumnus, and founder of the Congressional FFA Caucus, I am honored to introduce this resolution to celebrate National FFA Week. Selected to Serve on House Agriculture Subcommittees Last week, I was selected to serve on the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development and the Subcommittee on Nutrition, Foreign Agriculture, and Horticulture. I am honored to serve on these subcommittees as we work to craft sound, fiscally responsible farm and food policies. I serve in Congress to advocate for agriculture and our conservative Kansas values. The House Agriculture Committee and the farm bill it reauthorizes every five years legislate on everything from insuring crops and retaining folks in rural America to feeding kids and families, ensuring American producers have a market for their surplus product and forging new trade partnerships. Farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers in rural America are the lifeblood of this country, and I am proud to represent the Big First on these subcommittees. Standing against Mexico's arbitrary ban on GMO corn imports The Mexican government’s unscientific and arbitrary ban on genetically modified corn imports would disrupt billions of dollars of trade between Mexico and the U.S. and leave hundreds of thousands of people hungry. This is another example of politics over people – and in this case, hungry people. For years, we have seen a war on the science it takes to feed a hungry world. Claims that GMO science is unsafe are categorically false; GMO science has been on the market for 30 years, it is safe, it is reliable, and it is the only way we are going to keep people around the world from starving. America must continue demanding answers from Mexico and holding them accountable to both sound science and our trade agreements. Hungry people around the world deserve better, and so do Kansas corn farmers. This ban is unacceptable and needs to be reversed immediately.   Mann.House.Gov In the District Making Stops on the Mann Listening Tour Over the past two months, my team and I have hosted 15 town halls in 15 counties for my 60-county Mann Listening Tour. For more than 70 years Liberal, Kansas and Olney, England have participated in this friendly competition before Lent begins. Participants run 415 yards down the streets of each town flipping pancakes. The tradition dates back to 1445 when a woman was using up cooking fats that were forbidden during Lent to make pancakes. As she was making them, she heard the church bells ringing for the shriving service, at which point she grabbed her head scarf and ran 415 yards to the church with skillet and pancake in hand. Congratulations to Liberal's first-place winner, Isabelle Sullenger, and congratulations to Olney, England on winning the competition with a time of 65 seconds. Great job to all of this year's participants. I cosponsor the Stop Fentanyl Border Crossings Act, which expands Title 42 authority to allow the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to restrict migration and imports from foreign countries to prevent the introduction of fentanyl and other deadly, addictive drugs. People are dying in record numbers from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, and Congress must combat this crisis before it gets any worse.
