House Republicans intervene to BLOCK bills passed locally by elected officials
in Washington D.C.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that Republicans would continue to
interfere and overrule D.C.’s elected officials over the next two years
(remember: D.C. doesn’t get to have any voting members of Congress or a Governor
since it isn’t a state).

Remember:

The vast majority of Washington D.C.’s population – of more than 700,000
(larger than two states!) – isn’t remotely involved in working in politics
like Republicans would have you believe.

They are ordinary working American families who pay taxes but are denied
representation. And now, Kevin McCarthy gets to decide what legislation
their local elected officials pass actually gets to go into effect.

And consider the fact that nearly half of D.C.’s population is Black and
would make it the state with the highest share of Black families of any
state if statehood is granted.
