Today, we’re celebrating another huge win, John!

Last November, the PA GOP won a lawsuit to enforce an unnecessary rule that required a date on the outer envelope of mail-in-ballots. Because of this, more than 16,000 Pennsylvanians’ ballots were rejected — and an overwhelming majority were from Democrats.

Last week, The U.S Department of Justice (DOJ) intervened on a lawsuit challenging this rule. The DOJ stated that errors or omissions on dates do not relate to a voter’s qualification. Thus, as we said all along, disqualifying voters based on these errors violates the Civil Rights Act.

We were able to make historic gains in the last election despite this addition to the PA GOP’s voter suppression tactics, but they are nothing but persistent in their efforts to find new ways to stifle the Commonwealth’s voters. Can you pitch in $10 right now to help us keep up our work to combat voter suppression and empower those the GOP seeks to silence?

Pennsylvanians should not have to bend over backwards to cast a ballot, whether it be at the polls or through the mail. Voting should be easy and accessible, without a multitude of rules and regulations that make it harder.

As a voting rights organization, we are facing a double-edged sword. To engage voters, the voting process must be easy and accessible. To make voting easy and accessible, we need to elect leaders who will stand up against attacks on our voting rights.

The PA GOP knows exactly what they are doing, and that is exactly why we will continue educating our constituents. Will you donate $10 right now to provide us the resources we need to conduct year-round, consistent voter registration, civic engagement and mobilization centering Black, Indigenous, immigrants and other people of color and the youth?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
