Wildlands Network supports the science-based initiative to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030 to sustain and restore biodiversity. This framework, now commonly known as 30x30, provides a tangible solution to help halt and reverse the current alarming rate of biodiversity loss.

On the heels of the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, it is evident that strategically conserving lands and waters across the globe can connect core habitats and movement corridors for wildlife.

While 30x30 is a critical benchmark for large landscape conservation, conservation biologists have concluded that conserving 50 percent of earth’s land and waters is necessary to maintain healthy levels of biodiversity. At Wildlands Network, the 30x30 by goal is a steppingstone to a 50x50 solution.

In September 2022, we shared a report with Sonoran authorities, warning that only 10.6% of the state's land is legally protected, falling short of the recommendations to protect 30% of the planet's surface area by 2030.

Upon the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal targets and announcing a new municipal Natural Protected Area in Sonora, the 33-hectare Sistema Lagunar Los Jagüeyes in Hermosillo, our second edition report reiterates that protecting 30% of the territory in seven years is not only necessary, but entirely doable.

California hosts some of the richest biodiversity hotspots on the planet, but the state also has the largest human population of any state in the country.

Wildlands Network produced a paper that illustrates how to implement an evidence-based, strategic approach to conserving lands that will combat the biodiversity and climate crises in California and will ultimately achieve 30x30 across the state.

Wildlife Movement and Road Ecology Webinar

Join the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter and Wildlands Network with panelists from Utah Department of Transportation and Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources to discuss road ecology and wildlife movement in Utah and across the west.

Wildlands Network Western Wildway Director Michael Dax will speak to the importance of preserving wildlife corridors by reducing the impacts of roads - a critical step to creating conservation networks aligned with 30x30.

Conserving Our Nation’s Biodiversity

Join The George Washington University Law School's Environmental and Energy Law Program as it hosts its annual Shapiro Symposium in Washington DC, organized with Wildlands Network and other organizations.

Top officials in the Biden Administration will assess successes and obstacles encountered while implementing 30x30, and address opportunities to enhance 30x30-type initiatives in the U.S. and beyond.
