John,

The start of 2023 has been alarming for those of us concerned about the gun violence epidemic. On the heels of multiple mass shootings, I published an op-ed in USA Today this past weekend that shared my personal story and offered a path forward in this crisis. You can give it a read here [[link removed]] .

One particular note I addressed in the essay: Grief over gun violence is not a political ploy. Every time I call for action on this issue, Republicans accuse me of “using” the death of my son – and the countless others senselessly killed through gun violence – for political purposes.

I don’t shy away from the fact that Jordan’s death spurred me to take action. I promised that I would turn my pain into purpose and fight to save the children of others so that no more moms would have to go through what I did.

But it’s insulting to accuse me, and other survivors of gun violence, of using our pain as a political ploy when we know that unregulated guns are the problem. The statistics couldn’t be clearer. All I’m doing is stating the obvious: we can’t stand back and do nothing while the gun violence epidemic keeps taking its toll on our communities.

However, the NRA and the Republicans who they back are hellbent on preventing any regulation that would make it harder to access these high-powered weapons. My team in Congress has successfully passed legislation on red flag laws and universal background checks, but until these mass shootings become tragedies of the past, we’re not done fighting.
