Hello —

Five years ago, a gunman took the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Survivors — high school students — knew that they needed to take action. After all, they’d seen such tragedies decimate other schools and other communities before, and adults in power had not stopped the violence.

Over the past five years, those teenage students have grown into young adults. They are gun violence activists. They are voters. They’ve spoken out after shootings at shopping malls and schools because the violence still hasn’t stopped. In fact, in 2020, for the first time ever, firearms tragically became the number one cause of death for children in the U.S.!

Team, we know what we have to do. We owe it to the kindergarteners who have to practice lockdown drills before they understand why and the high school seniors who’ve spent their entire school careers fearing the threat of gun violence. We owe it to victims, survivors, and activists. We must enact the commonsense solutions that we know will bring down deaths — now.

We need universal background checks to keep guns out of criminals’ hands. We need red flag laws to remove weapons from people who pose a threat to themselves or others. We need to prevent anyone under 21 from buying an AR-15. They can’t buy a cigarette or a beer; they shouldn't be able to buy a semi-automatic rifle.

As your next Governor, those are solutions I will advocate for and implement — but I can’t do it alone. We need Republican legislators to set partisanship aside and get on board with commonsense gun violence prevention. Please, take just a moment on today’s solemn anniversary to add your name to my petition supporting necessary gun safety policies >>> [[link removed]]
