While reflecting on the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement, it's important to remember that the work these pioneers started so many decades ago is not done. Ending segregation and discrimination in housing, schools, public transit, and so many other spaces is something we are still struggling to achieve.

The fight for voting rights has been particularly difficult. Across the country, GOP legislatures are using a Supreme Court ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to dismantle suffrage and recreate old barriers to voting.

In Florida, voting rights activists like the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition were able to achieve a rare victory in the South, championing voter-approved Amendment 4, which restored voting rights to former felons. Almost immediately, however, the GOP-led legislature and governor passed a law requiring that former felons pay off all of their court fees and fines before they can vote -- a modern poll tax.

Florida's state Supreme Court just upheld this law last week. So now, the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition is working to get as many former felons enfranchised as possible by helping them pay their fines and fees. But they need you to continue their work.
