Washington D.C. – On Monday morning, I traveled to Petersburg, West Virginia with the House Ways and Means Committee for a field hearing on the state of the economy for American workers and families. I’m committed to amplifying the voices of real Americans living and working in diverse communities. You can watch our hearing here. I also joined my colleagues in filing an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court regarding the Biden Administration’s student loan bailout, which exploits legislation drafted in the wake of 9/11 meant to assist service members and veterans. This week, I met with students from Dallas College who were in town for the Association of Community College Trustees summit. I attended President Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday where he chose dishonesty and fear mongering over offering real solutions. My colleagues and I are working to create solutions to address the real issues affecting hard working Americans and I implore the President to work with us, rather than against us. On Wednesday, I met with members of the Texas Fraternal Order of Police to discuss ways to ensure our police officers have the resources they need to keep our communities safe. During the pandemic the size and scope of fraud in our federal unemployment programs skyrocketed, allowing fraudsters and international crime rings to claim benefits that should have gone to unemployed Americans. In the Ways and Means Committee hearing this week, I grilled federal watchdogs for answers on where the money went and if we can get it back. You can watch the hearing here. Texas-24 Work of the Week This week, I introduced two new bills to protect and preserve Social Security and Medicare. Despite divisive rhetoric from the White House and past instances of Democrats using these programs as slush funds to pay for partisan projects, House Republicans will protect and preserve these vital programs. Hometown Hero Our Texas-24 Hometown Heroes of the week are Brenda and David Hughes, who created the award-winning “Stay in the Light” Christmas exhibit in memory of their son. Brenda and David commit over 100 hours and hang 60,000 lights to honor their son and give back to those in need within their community.
