John,

With a new Congress and a Republican-controlled House, we have our work cut out for us in advancing artistic protections and securing defendants’ rights. So we need to get started now.

Last Congress, Hank introduced the Restoring Artistic Protection (RAP) Act to keep overzealous prosecutors from using artists’ works against them in court. Our supporters rallied around the bill, signing on to protect artistic expression.

We’re asking you to join us again this year in rallying around artistic freedom. Republicans only hold a slim majority, and some of them may be open to bolstering the First Amendment, so we need to give the RAP Act every chance we can of passing. Will you sign your name to show your support for passing the RAP Act during the 118th Congress?

This isn’t hypothetical, John. Rappers have had to worry about their lyrics being used against them even when performing as a made up persona or writing lyrics in a clearly fictional way.

Punishing free expression creates a chilling effect and suppresses free speech. We cannot allow prosecutors to strip our nation of its character and soul. We have to stand in support of artistic expression.

Musicians should not be prosecuted because of their lyrics. Artists should not fear their expressions being used against them in court. Please add your name if you agree and want to see Congress take action on the RAP Act >>

Thank you,
