Your inbox is probably flooded with emails about Black History Month, and we love that! It’s inspiring to celebrate Black heroines and heroes, and to marvel at how far we’ve come. But you know what’s even better? The fact that we’re writing history together.

There are those who learn from history and those whose inaction destines them to repeat it. Today, as we face down factions that want to erase the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr, John Lewis, and countless others, we’re reminded of Dr. King’s plea to persevere: “The road ahead is not altogether a smooth one. There are no broad highways that lead us easily and inevitably to quick solutions. But we must keep going.”

Thanks to you, NNCP is doing exactly that. We’re choosing the steady road, embedding in communities of color 365 days of every year, and doing the kind of committed work that renews faith in what we can achieve when we keep showing up. In the same speech, Dr. King spoke of how Black people and impoverished whites have been pitted against one another, preemptively destroying the immense collective power we hold when united, declaring, “They segregated southern minds from honest thinking; and they segregated the Negro from everything. That’s what happened when the Negro and white masses of the South threatened to unite and build a great society: a society of justice where none would prey upon the weakness of others; a society of plenty where greed and poverty would be done away; a society of brotherhood where every man would respect the dignity and worth of human personality.”

Jack, we think you’ll agree that it’s better to learn from history than to repeat it. When North Carolina’s people of color told us what they needed in order to believe our democracy can work for them, they described things that move all of us: an affordable home to raise a family, economic opportunities that will allow them to live without gut-wrenching anxiety, the confidence that they can return home safely at night to sleep peacefully in their own beds. By delivering on the four pillars of our BIPOC Proclamation- economic mobility, housing, public safety, and civic engagement- we can give voters of color exactly what they care about, and realize the dream expressed six decades ago by Martin Luther King Jr. Although these pillars will be planted in communities of color, they will lift Black, Brown and White alike, proving that we really are unstoppable when we’re united – just as Dr. King said.

Our nation is once again at a historic crossroads, and our commitment to the sustained work of establishing equity could determine the health of our democracy for decades to come. Rather than allowing our opposition to force us to repeat the past, will you help us build the kind of “great society” Dr. King described?
