** A shopkeeper has been handed a suspended jail term for selling illegal tobacco in Newcastle-under-Lyme after pleading guilty to 28 charges relating to the sale and supply of a stash with a street value of more than £21,000.

Trading Standards officers found the packets hidden in the ceiling of his shop. The shopkeeper was also ordered to pay £3,487 when he appeared before North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Monday.

Officers from Staffordshire County Council's trading standards service found the fake tobacco during two inspections in 2021.

Victoria Wilson, cabinet member with responsibility for trading standards at Staffordshire County Council said: "Illegal tobacco damages our communities and harms legitimate businesses and we will take action against traders who knowingly sell it”.

** The Spectator reports Mark Fullbrook, Liz Truss’ former chief of staff, and former manager of Crosby Textor Fullbrook Partners, a lobbying firm with ties to the tobacco industry, has returned to political lobbying.

The Spectator reports: “Undaunted by past controversies, [Fullbrook] has returned to Fullbrook Strategies Limited – the firm he established and ran between spring and September last year.”

The article explains, that whilst “senior officials leaving their posts are [normally] subject to a two-year ban by the Cabinet Office agency Acoba before they can lobby the government”, “Fullbrook […] has had that waived in light of his [...] shorter than expected service.”

** Serbia considers banning indoor smoking
------------------------------------------------------------

** Indoor smoking could soon be banned in Serbia as the Health Ministry is already looking for the public to support a bill on the prohibition of smoking in closed spaces.

Banning indoor smoking has become a hotly debated issue in Serbia, particularly as 6,000 people on average are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, while 4,600 die from it. Meanwhile, the country has one of the highest smoking rates in the region and Europe.

Professor Dr. Dragana Jovanović, pulmonologist, pneumophthisiologist and oncologist said: “The fact is that the risk of lung cancer of smokers is 18 times higher. Among patients, 85-87% are smokers. Protecting non-smokers is particularly important as they would inhale 40% of tobacco in a closed room. Smoking has the same effect on non-smokers as it has on active smokers. Children exposed to passive smoking have an increased risk of acute respiratory infections. The risk of asthma attacks in children is also increased, and it can also cause sudden infant death syndrome,” Prof. Dr. Jovanović stressed. “Children who are socially disadvantaged and exposed to tobacco smoke are particularly vulnerable”, the professor added.
