Don't let anti-choice extremists' disinformation confuse you.

There's been a lot of talk about medication abortion lately. Medication abortion is a safe and effective method of abortion care that typically involves taking two medications: a pill called mifepristone is taken first, and the second pill, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours later.

Medication abortion is the most common abortion method used in the U.S. and has been FDA-approved for over 20 years, but a federal lawsuit could soon change that: Anti-choice groups have sued the FDA—challenging its approval of mifepristone and demanding it be pulled from the market. If they're successful, the Trump-appointed federal judge in this case could rule in favor of a backdoor national ban on medication abortion. Check out our blog explainer for more information on this federal lawsuit.

Let's be clear: Despite anti-choice groups' attempts to spread disinformation, medication abortion is safe, effective, and has been used by millions of people over the past 20 years.

We're committed to combating disinformation. So what are the facts?

❌ MYTH: Abortion pills are dangerous.

✅ FACT: Medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill, has been a safe and effective method for abortion care and miscarriage treatment for over 20 years. It has a safety record of over 99%, which is safer than Tylenol.

❌ MYTH: I live in a state where abortion is legal. This lawsuit in Texas won't affect me.

✅ FACT: This is a federal lawsuit, which means the way this judge rules can have a nationwide effect. If he decides to rule against the FDA's 20+ year approval of mifepristone, it could effectively ban that abortion pill for medication abortion care nationwide—even in states that protect abortion.

Medication abortion is the most common method for abortion care in the country, and this lawsuit would have widespread, devastating effects for everybody.

❌ MYTH: Mifepristone is only used for abortion care.

✅ FACT: Mifepristone can be a life-saving intervention to treat miscarriages. In some cases, not having access to these medications can put a person at risk for severe infection, infertility, or even death.

✅ FACT: The anti-choice groups' argument in the Texas federal lawsuit is a baseless attempt to ban medication abortion. The FDA approved mifepristone over 20 years ago based on science, not a political agenda.
